Craving perfectly straight, sleek hair? It may be time to head back to the flat iron.

Brazilian Blowout—one of the popular versions of the Brazilian keratin straightening treatments currently offered at salons—has just been confirmed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) to contain “dangerous levels” of formaldehyde, in spite of its label claim to be “Formaldehyde Free.”

The violations are just two of several cited in the FDA’s public letter to Brazilian Blowout CEO Mike Brady, which goes on to institute a mid-September deadline for the company to either address all concerns, or risk seizure and injunction of product inventory.

Yet controversy is not new to the Hollywood-based company. In November 2010, California’s attorney general’s office filed a lawsuit against Brazilian Blowout, claiming that the high levels of formaldehyde in the product was illegal under the terms of California’s Safe Cosmetics Act, as well as in violation of Proposition 65—which requires clear labeling of chemicals that can cause cancer.

And while Brazilian Blowout has been in the spotlight of scrutiny, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (O.S.H.A.) put out a hazardous materials alert just five months ago for similar brands of straightening products in addition to the Brazilian Blowout, emphasizing that stylists who work with and expose themselves to formaldehyde repeatedly could be placing their health in danger.

We were just talking about this at cosmetology school.

The problem is that part of the process of this treatment is to flat iron the hair once you’ve saturated it with the product in order to seal it into the cuticle and when you do THAT, there is a chemical reaction that produces formaldehyde gas.

But.

There is a trace amount of formaldehyde in a TON of beauty products that we use. The FDA approves the use of it when it’s under a certain amount.

Not to mention, hair color, chemical straighteners, and permanent waving solution all contains “bad” kinds of chemicals like ammonia, sodium hydroxide, ammonium thioglycolate, peroxide, and on and on and on. And even the ones that claim to be “ammonia-free” have substitutes that are just as harsh.

That said, a classmate had gotten this straightening treatment done and she didn’t have any problems at all. It didn’t smell, it didn’t burn her eyes, she didn’t cough. Nothing. Totally fine.

So I guess just do your own research and make your own decisions about what you expose yourself to and don’t let people scare you away with buzz words.

There are also keratin treatments that do not contain the same levels of formaldehyde, and actually strengthen the hair.

From what I’ve heard too, the main concern of the formaldehyde in Brazilian Blowouts has less to do with the impact on one person after one use (low) as it is for the artist who would be exposed to these chemicals all day.

Well this notice is more for Black women. The point being products advertised and used on Black women lie regularly and try to poison us. All hair care products have chemicals of types, some more than others. The point here is that there is WAY more formaldehyde in the product than FDA approved and more than advertised. That’s lying about a product used by more Black and Latina women to make a profit. Furthermore it’s advertised as a safer way to straighten your hair instead of relaxer. Well… Turns out its not just as bad but almost. Hair care products feel they can pump all kinds of chemicals in our products and LIE about it.
